1cr+ screened under National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission

The Union Health Ministry has screened more than one crore people for sickle cell anemia under the government's Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission. The Mission aims to screen 7 crore population in 3 years. Launched by the Prime Minister in July 2023, the program focuses on 278 districts of 17 states with higher prevalence of SCD. Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder characterized by abnormal hemoglobin, leading to vaso-occlusive events, chronic pain, anemia, and organ damage. While there is no cure, various treatments aim to manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
